During the days that followed, many people appeared. Some were public adjusters and others were contractors. They all suggested that they could help us. As the dust settled and it became clear that there was no one on "our side," we began to think that maybe we could use some help. Maybe, just maybe, I was not as prepared for what lay a ahead as I thought. I met with you and Steve Severaid from your office. I met with others who offered similar services and as a result of these early meetings I set up interviews for the "final contestants" with our board of directors. Now that our insurance efforts and legal skirmishes are all complete it is time for us to extend some credit for a job well done. We are certain that many people contributed to this program, but we wish to single out one person at The Greenspan Co./Adjusters International who we feel did an outstanding job. That person is Ken Elkman. He clearly believed in what he was doing and he followed through. He always made himself available to discuss the many turns the program took, even when the situation did not appear healthy. Ken was not just positive, but informative as well. It’s a pleasure to deal with people who know what they are doing, who believe in it and can convey that to their clients. In retrospect, we felt that we were well informed and well served.

The decision of our board of directors was based on the realization that no one on our board of directors had the necessary expertise and knowledge regarding major property losses caused by hurricanes. The board of directors strongly felt that hiring an independent adjuster was the only way to ensure our condominium received all of the compensation we were entitled to from our insurance company. It is very important to note that much of the damage which The Greenspan Co./Adjusters International identified was not noticed by our co-owners, our maintenance staff or the insurance company adjuster.

His patience and understanding in our particular situation, where twenty families were forced from their homes, was matched by his perseverance and sense of urgency in coming to a satisfactory conclusion.

Prior to the Association's hiring your firm to adjust our property claim, Farmers Insurance had offered us a settlement of $12.5 million. We knew this sum was insufficient but we never realized how much until The Greenspan Co./Adjusters International settled our claim within eight months for $27 million. Ken, you were tenacious in dealing with Farmers. You documented all discussions with Farmers personnel, detailed damages down to the penny and left no rock unturned.
